Since the last update, we left Casa Grande on the 19th and travelled to Willcox, Arizona. For all you baby boomers it is the hometown of Rex Allen. For the younger crowd you will need to :google" him up. The community was named for Civil War Gen. Orlando B. Willcox.
Although Willcox is somewhat in the middle of nowhere, there is lots of interesting things to do and places to see within a short distance. Several years ago we pretty well covered this area, but still find it a very nice place to explore. Willcox is in the Sulphur Springs Valley. Once a stagecoach stop; passengers left overland stages here and took buckboards to destinations such as Fort Apache, Grant and Thomas. Historic sites and museums: Fort Bowie National Historic Site, Chiricahua National Monument, Museum of the Southwest,Cochise's Stronghold, Rex Allen Museum and Cowboy Hall of Fame. Also for the birders, thier is a large population of Sandhill Cranes that come here to winter. This year was the most most ever recorded at a little over 36,000 of them. Today, the 21st we travelled to Deming, New Mexico. We checked into the RV park for 5 days with intentions of exploring Deming a litlle and some nearby towns and sites. Deming is a city in Luna County, New Mexico, located 60 miles west of Las Cruces. The population was 14,116 at the 2000 census. Deming is the county seat and principal town of Luna County. Deming is named after Mary Ann Deming Crocker, wife of Charles Crocker, one of The Big Four of the railroad industry. The Silver Spike was driven here in 1881 to commemorate the meeting of the Southern Pacific with the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe railroads. This was the second complete transcontinental railroad in the United States.
There are numerous prehistoric Native American sites around Deming. The Mimbres and Casas Grandes cultures made pottery of remarkable quality, and the Deming area is (or was) rich in native pottery artifacts...as well as beads, stone implements, stone carvings, graves. After we get in some time exploring I will get back to You with some more updates....Adios
