Today we rode down to Rockhound State Park which is not far from our campground. It is a rockhounders paradise and rockies come from all over the world to get their rocks here............. So if your a rocky be sure to put this place down on your must see list. Driving into the park, the scenery is breathtaking. It is a nice drive, even if your like us and do your rock hunting from the comfort of your car....After driving to the end of the road and taking photos along the way, we headed back out. As we left the picnic site we saw about 20 Border Patrol agents sweeping across the hill and down toward the exit road.. We pulled off on a side road and watched them until they got to the road near where we were parked...I pulled up beside one of them and Connie asked if they were looking for someone. The Agent was polite and short to the point "Yes Mam" he answered and strolled on off. Now that we had that wealth of information..thanks Mr. Agent....we slowly drove to the park entrance. Near the entrance to the park is a Rock Museum run by 2 gentleman who have to be a couple of the worlds most knowlegable people concerning rocks......Specfically "Thundereggs". A thunderegg (or thunder egg) is a geological structure, similar to a geode, that is formed within a rhyolitic lava flow. Thundereggs are not actually rocks, but rather geologic nodules which occur within other igneous rocks.
Thundereggs are rough spheres, most about the size of a baseball. They contain centers of chalcedony in the form of agate, jasper, or opal.Thundereggs look like ordinary rocks on the outside, but slicing them in half may reveal intricate patterns and colors, which make them valuable in jewelry. And talk about about a small world.....Another couple was at the museum and we got to talking to them. They are staying in Deming for the winter at an RV park down the road from us. The conversation got around to "where Yall from?"...Turns out they are from Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, about 60 miles from our home. They have gotten bit by the "rockin" bug and have quite a collection. Click on the pictures to see all the pictures
