We went through the Vicksburg National Battlefield Park and it has more granite structures than any place we have ever been.Besides the Welcome Center, their is a 15 mile self guided car tour through the park. Also the Museum of the USS Cario is within the park. I will let those photos speak for themselves.
A total of 28 states had units involved in this battle. Of course most were from the northern states under General Grant and General Sherman.
In addition to what the National Park Service has created they have "allowed" the individual states and any private donors at their own expense to erect memorials to whom they have ties..
Their are large memorials put up by some individual states and some smaller ones that honor individual units and men. Also we saw some installed by private donations from family members in honor of their Grandparents or other family members.
Below is a slideshow with about one fourth of the monuments in the park. I felt like that was a good representation of the park to honor the fallen.
We left Vicksburg yesterday and traveled to Tupelo, Mississippi.
Arriving late in the evening we decided to spend the night in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Five other RV's had the same idea.
Today we moved to The Campground at Barnes Crossing.
For all you Elvis Fans, you already know that Tupelo is where Elvis was born and the house he was born here is open to the public, for a fee of course. We probably will not take the tour, but may go by and take some photos from the outside. Kinda stormy so we may not get them pictures.
A good friend of ours, Laura has probably shook a many a leg to Elvis's songs. She still shakes a leg now and then.
